Angela Lansbury, who has starred in a number of Disney films over her long career, has just joined the cast of Mary Poppins Returns, the sequel to Disney’s 1964 film Mary Poppins currently filming at Shepperton Studios. She will portray the character the Balloon Lady.

10th February 2017 - Production Begins
PL Travers did write seven additional books that continued the tale of Mary Poppins, but they have never been brought to film. Until now! Mary Poppins Returns is set in 1930s London, which is the time period of the original novels by PL Travers. The story follows Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane Banks (Emily Mortimer), who are now grown up. Michael is living with his three children (Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh, and Joel Dawson) and housekeeper Ellen (Julie Walters), in the house on Cherry Tree Lane! After a personal loss, Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) comes back into the lives of the Banks family. She is joined by a street lamplighter named Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), and an eccentric cousin named Topsy (Meryl Streep). And we are so excited that Dick Van Dyke will play a role in the film as Mr. Dawes Jr., the chairman of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank, which is now run by William Weatherall Wilkins (Colin Firth). We could not be more excited for this cast!
The creative team for Mary Poppins Returns is also absolutely amazing. The film is directed by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods, Chicago) and produced by John DeLuca (Chicago) and Marc Platt (La La Land). The screenplay is written by David Magee (Life of Pi) and is based on The Mary Poppins Stories by PL Travers. Marc Shaiman (“Hairspray”) and Scott Wittman (“Hairspray”) will also be writing all new songs, with Shaiman composing an original score. They are joined by director of photography Dion Beebe, ASC ACS (Memoirs of a Geisha), production designer John Myhre (Memoirs of a Geisha, Chicago), costume designer Sandy Powell (The Young Victoria, The Aviator, Shakespeare in Love), hair and make-up designer Peter Swords King (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King), set decorator Gordon Sim (Chicago), production sound mixer Simon Hayes (Les Misérables), and editor Wyatt Smith (Doctor Strange, Into the Woods). The film is choreographed by Marshall and DeLuca with Joey Pizzi (Chicago) serving as co-choreographer.

20th December 2016 - Dick Van Dyke to Cameo
Dick Van Dyke will dust off his dancing shoes for Mary Poppins Returns, Disney’s sequel to the 1964 movie musical in which he costarred with Julie Andrews.
The 91-year-old entertainer recently confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that he’s set to make a cameo in the new film, which will star Emily Blunt in the title role, along with Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, and Colin Firth. Rob Marshall is directing.
“Well, I’ve got to be a part of it,” Van Dyke said, adding that he’ll travel to London to shoot in the spring. “I think I’ll just have the one scene, and a little song and dance in it.”
Van Dyke won’t be reprising his main role as Bert, the cockney jack-of-all-trades who accompanied Andrews’ magical nanny, but his character will be somewhat familiar: He’s playing the son of the elderly banker he portrayed in the original, then wearing copious makeup.
“This time there’s no four hours in the makeup chair,” Van Dyke said. “I grew into the part. I don’t have to wear makeup at all.”

19th October 2016 - Colin Firth Joins CastColin Firth is in negotiations to join Disney's sequel Mary Poppins Returns.
Rob Marshall is directing Mary Poppins Returns from an adapted script by David Magee, as well as producing alongside Marc Platt and John DeLuca. Marc Shaiman is composing an all-new score; he and Scott Wittman are collaborating in writing the original songs.
Firth will play William Weatherall Wilkins, president of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank.

6th October 2016 - Emily Mortimer Joins CastEmily Mortimer has signed on to join Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda in Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns.”
Mortimer will play Jane Banks, who along with her brother Jonathan (who will be played by Ben Whishaw in the pic), was one of the children the magical titular nanny looked after in the original 1964 film, and is now all-grown-up in this installment. The movie is set 25 years after the original.

15th August 2016 - Ben Whishaw in Talks to Join CastBen Whishaw, who plays Q in the Daniel Craig James Bond movies, is in negotiations to join Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda in Disney’s sequel to Mary Poppins.
The movie, titled Mary Poppins Returns, already has Meryl Streep in talks to join the call sheet.
Rob Marshall is directing Disney's film, which will be set 20 years after events in the 1964 classic.
Whishaw will play the character of a grown-up Michael Banks, who is a key figure in the new story. Banks experiences a person loss and sees the return of his big sister Jane. That results in the arrival of the magical Mary Poppins (Blunt) who teams up with her lamplighter friend Jack (Miranda) to help the family.
Marshall, John DeLuca and Marc Platt are producing the project, which will shoot early 2017 in London. The movie has a December 25, 2018 release date.

28th July 2016 - Meryl Streep in Talks to Join CastIs Meryl Streep ready for a spoonful of sugar?
Sources tell Variety, the Oscar-winning actress is in talks to join Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel-Miranda in Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns.”
If a deal closes, the family film would reunite Streep with the “Into the Woods” musical team of Blunt, director Rob Marshall, and producer Marc Platt.
Streep is said to play the role of Poppins’ cousin, Topsy, a supporting role that wasn’t included in the original film. Streep would also sing for the part, much like she did in “Into the Woods,” which earned her a record 19th Oscar nomination.

The 1964 classic, Mary Poppins, will be getting a sequel titled Mary Poppins Returns on December 25, 2018. Emily Blunt (Into the Woods) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, In the Heights) are set to star in the film directed by Rob Marshall (director of Into the Woods). The screenplay, which will be based on The Mary Poppins stories by P.L. Travers, will be written by David Magee (Life of Pi).
Blunt has been cast as Mary Poppins, while Miranda will be playing a brand new character named Jack, who is described as a street lamplighter. The story is set to take place in Depression-era London, and will follow a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by their old nanny Mary Poppins after a personal loss. Poppins will once again use her unique powers to help the family “rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.”
“I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation,” says Marshall.

24th February 2016 - Lin-Manuel Miranda in Talks to Join CastHamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda is in talks to join the Walt Disney Studios’ planned sequel to Mary Poppins. Emily Blunt is in talks for the lead role, played by Julie Andrews in the 1964 film.
Disney had no comment, but a source with knowledge of the project says the untitled film will connect with Mary’s charges, Jane and Michael Banks, now grown and with Michael’s own three kids in need of a nanny. Mary and her “lamplighter” friend Jack — kin to Bert the chimney sweep played by Dick Van Dyke opposite Andrews in the film — help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing from their lives. Miranda’s Disney ties already include the bar scene music for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the score for the animated film Moana, coming in November.

Travers’ 1934 book of the same name while the sequel, currently untitled, will draw from the seven subsequent Mary Poppins books Travers published between 1935 and 1988. To be set in Depression-era London, the Mary Poppins sequel will focus on a now-grown Michael Banks, who has children of his own.
In tough times, big sister Jane returns and they are thrilled when their beloved Mary Poppins comes back to help. Rob Marshall, attached to direct, is producing along with Marc Platt and John DeLuca. Original songs and an all-new score will be written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the duo behind the Broadway musical version of Hairspray. The script will be written by Finding Neverland scribe David Magee is attached to write the screenplay.

The film unit has been busy with reboots of classic characters, and now comes word of a 21st century Mary Poppins. The company is adding a spoonful of sugar to a new live-action musical from Into The Woods director Rob Marshall, set two decades after the classic Disney film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke that won five Oscars.
The new Mary Poppins will mine P.L. Travers’ half-century-plus worth of books about the magical English nanny. Tunesmiths Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are set to whip up original songs for the pic, complementing David Magee’s screenplay.
