The 91-year-old entertainer recently confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that he’s set to make a cameo in the new film, which will star Emily Blunt in the title role, along with Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, and Colin Firth. Rob Marshall is directing.
“Well, I’ve got to be a part of it,” Van Dyke said, adding that he’ll travel to London to shoot in the spring. “I think I’ll just have the one scene, and a little song and dance in it.”
Van Dyke won’t be reprising his main role as Bert, the cockney jack-of-all-trades who accompanied Andrews’ magical nanny, but his character will be somewhat familiar: He’s playing the son of the elderly banker he portrayed in the original, then wearing copious makeup.
“This time there’s no four hours in the makeup chair,” Van Dyke said. “I grew into the part. I don’t have to wear makeup at all.”

31st May 2016 - Disney Announces Title & Release Date with Emily Blunt & Lin-Manuel Miranda to StarHold on to your umbrellas folks, have we got some news for you! The 1964 classic, Mary Poppins, will be getting a sequel titled Mary Poppins Returns on December 25, 2018. Emily Blunt (Into the Woods) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, In the Heights) are set to star in the film directed by Rob Marshall (director of Into the Woods). The screenplay, which will be based on The Mary Poppins stories by P.L. Travers, will be written by David Magee (Life of Pi).
Blunt has been cast as Mary Poppins, while Miranda will be playing a brand new character named Jack, who is described as a street lamplighter. The story is set to take place in Depression-era London, and will follow a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by their old nanny Mary Poppins after a personal loss. Poppins will once again use her unique powers to help the family “rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.”
“I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation,” says Marshall.
